Czech Republic

Prague & Southern Bohemia 11 Days
From the Empire to the Occupation to Communism to the Velvet Revolution and back to the Republic, Czechoslovakia has had its share of makeovers. And still it evolves. As the Czech Republic today, after it’s peaceful dissolution in 1993, this small land-locked country bares the soul of an enchanted land left over from a best-selling fairytale. Twenty years later the Czech Republic is traditional eastern bloc values meets monumental and dignified architecture meets modern business and high fashion. The ancient lines of this land ring out from its bucolic rolling hills, Medieval towns and spellbinding Châteaux. Seemingly stuck in an era that time itself forgot, upon closer inspection you’ll find a people with a flexible soul, modern tendencies and probably the best strudel ever made this side of the Habsburg Empire. This journey will start and finish in the celebrated Prague. Everything in between yields Baroque masterpieces framed by scenic valleys, Hansel and Gretel forests juxtaposed with vibrant urban life.
Word is getting out about the Czech Republic; we highly recommend you get here now, before the crowds take your piece of eastern block charm and strudel with them.

Hotel Josef, Prague
This 4-star hotel is a stand-out design hotel, with contemporary, hip décor. The breakfast is amazing (probably the best we’ve had in Czech) and the location, steps to the historical district and Charles bridge make it convenient.

The Chornitzer House, Telc

This luxurious pension is situated in Hradec square, described as one of the most picturesque in the country. Named after the owner in 1700’s it was renovated in 2009 with spacious apartments.

Hotel Besidka, Slavonice
This hotel was transformed from an abandoned house by a group from the legendary theatre Sklep. There are 8 rooms named after the original owners. There is a lively restaurant on site.

Hotel Konvice, Cesky-Krumlov
This hotel is one of the highest-rated by guests in CK; this charming family owned hotel is in a quiet location in the historical center of town. Frommers notes, "As you gaze at the river and the castle on the opposite bank, you'll wonder why anyone would choose to stay elsewhere." If you prefer to stay at Hotel Zlaty Andel, this is an option, but its drawbacks are that it is on the main square and noise can be an issue.

Hotel Nautilus, Tabor *Luxe Inn

This 4-star boutique hotel was renovated from a former townhouse and is located on the central plaza of Tabor, with comfortable rooms and an exquisite restaurant. Frommers notes, "Easily the most stylish and comfortable hotel in town."

Hotel Yasmin, Prague
This NY Times recommended 4-star hotel is unique with contemporary design and luxurious amenities. Wenceslas Square, Municipal Hall, and Old Town Square are within walking distance.
The Grand Hotel Bohemia is also an option at the Luxe level (no sur-charge).

Hotel Celerin, Telc

This 3-star hotel is around the corner from the main square of Telc. There are just 12 rooms and the décor ranges from cosy wood to white-wedding chintz (Lonely Planet recommended).

Hotel Besidka, Slavonice *Classic Inn
This hotel was transformed from an abandoned house by a group from the legendary theatre Sklep. There are 8 rooms named after the original owners. There is a lively restaurant on site.

Hotel Ruze, Cesky-Krumlov

Located in a former Jesuit monastery from the 16th century, this 5 star hotel is Cesky-Krumlov’s best rated and is located walking distance to all of the prime sites of town. The lounges and salons are lavishly decorated and the guest rooms are large.

Hotel Nautilus, Tabor

This 4-star boutique hotel was renovated from a former townhouse and is located on the central plaza of Tabor, with comfortable rooms and an exquisite restaurant. Frommers notes, "Easily the most stylish and comfortable hotel in town."

Cloister Inn, Prague
This 3-star hotel was once a medieval monastery complex founded in the middle ages by the Jesuits. Renovated into a hotel in 1999, it has gained a reputation as a welcoming and casual hotel with a great location.

Pension Telc, Telc

Charming B&B with romantic rooms decorated with flare. Located on the main square.

Apartments Pod Vezi, Slavonice
While there is no front desk, the apartments here are stylish. Breakfast is not available here, so you will need to take at a nearby café.

Pension Rozmaryna, Cesky-Krumlov

Located close to the castle, this is a lovely B&B with friendly and efficient staff and excellent breakfast.

Staromestky Pension, Tabor

We like this small inn! It’s friendly and charming – we’ve stayed here and very much enjoyed the ambience.
